Going Green

Well the new year has come and gone, and we are already feeling right in the thick of 2010.  So much was said last year, and right around the New Year about organics and going green that it is hardly possible to keep up.  I think everyone would agree that recycling and supporting organic farming and production are a few things we all need to do more of in our daily lives.  Saying you want to be "greener" is easy, so we actually decided to do something about it.  Bras and Mattos Monument Company recently adopted a technique used in our production which has made us much greener in how we produce granite memorials.  Our filler (rock glue) consumption is down by more than half, and our cleaner (the non toxic adhesive remover we use to clean the stone after it has been carved and painted) has been cut in half as well.  While the volume being saved may be small per piece, multiplied by the amount of custom memorials we produce a year it is a pretty substantial amount.  Like the saying goes "when everyone does a little, a lot gets done." Though the process is very technical and difficult to describe in this forum, the end result is that Bras and Mattos Monument Company uses much less glue and cleaner in our production per double processed memorial then the vast majority of the memorial industry.

We made a decision at Bras and Mattos Monument Company when we switched our technique on double processed memorials that not only benefits the environment positively, but also our pricing.  The cost savings associated with a "greener" production, (which will be described in more detail in the next blog entry) ultimately, again, effects buyers positively on two levels.  We are obviously a company that cares very much about doing whatever possible to alter our production to be more environmentally friendly.  Happily in the case of adopting our new double process technique we have also lowered a small cost of our production on those memorials.  In grateful appreciation to our longtime loyal and return customers, as well as the new generation we are currently growing and serving  we have been able to pass those savings along to our customers by not raising our prices to begin the new year. Although most companies around us, even the majority the vendors we buy from decided to raise their prices, we have been blessed in that we found another creative way to help insure our prices stay very competitive.  Our hope is that our efforts, and this value will help insure that no loved one goes without a memorial in 2010.
